Why there is a number on this site

The chamber under your lint screen is the one nobody knows about

We argue for this extra harder than the other one, and the reasoning is straightforward.

The slot your screen drops into is the opening of a chamber running down into the machine. Anything finer than the mesh goes straight past, as does whatever brushes off the screen when you withdraw it, and it all settles in that chamber. There is no drain, no service interval, and most owners have no idea it is there.

So it loads up. And because it sits on the intake side of the whole system, it is throttling airflow before any of it reaches the duct you have just paid to have cleared.

It matters more in Queen Creek than in most towns, because farm and construction dust give it something denser than ordinary household lint to pack with.

How it gets cleaned

Depends on the machine. Many dryers let the chamber come apart, so we take it apart, clean it out and reassemble. Others route their exhaust in a way that makes that impossible.

On those we use an air rod that drives the packed material out of the cavity with a vacuum box connected on the far side, so what comes free is captured rather than pushed elsewhere in the machine or into the room. Either way the chamber ends up empty, which is the objective.

We have taken dryers apart where that chamber had never once been opened, and putting right what running that hot for that long had done came to more than the machine was worth replacing.

An observation rather than a pitch. Element, thermostat, blower wheel, plus the labour to reach any of them, adds up quickly on a unit already ten years old. The technician then advises against the repair, and the replacement proceeds to do exactly the same thing on exactly the same untouched chamber.

Ninety-eight now against eight hundred to fifteen hundred for a new machine is not a difficult call.

Do it if the dryer has five or more years on it, if it has never been opened, if you have pets or animals, or if you are near worked fields or an active build. Leave it if the machine is close to new.

And the hose upgrade?

The transition hose is the short flexible length between the appliance and the duct in the wall. Builder-grade corrugated foil has two failings: it folds flat under pressure from the machine, and each ridge catches lint. Rigid transition duct has neither.

Do it if you have builder foil, or the machine sits hard against the wall. Leave it if rigid duct is already fitted and sound.
